Candidly Candid

I have a confession to make...
I don’t own a tripod. It’s not that I don’t believe in them; it’s because 99% of the time I have no use for one in my photography.

Purists would jump me for saying that, but hear me out.

I’ve always loved shooting people, and I’ve always felt that I get the best results through candid photography. People always act differently in front of a camera... You’re a liar if you deny this.

There’s a charm inherent to candid portraits because your subject doesn’t have a chance to react to the camera and tense up.

This woman was waiting in line for weekly free food in a favela in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. (Other candid favela portraits can be found here)

I’m not sure that Alex was too cognizant after a two hour drive and an incredibly early call time.

Rich didn’t know that I was snapping stills between takes of this Angels in America scene we were shooting for a directing class. His character is embroiled in an argument over his sexuality with his troubled wife.

Joe mysteriously isolated himself from the group for a little bit during a tour in Israel...

Max glanced over long enough for me to snap this one as he was getting made up before hosting an episode of Off The Wire.

Ernesto was wrapping up a marathon in the editing lab.

Always watch the eyes. :)
